Day 10 - Torridon and the surrounding area
....reaching for the clouds....
Today is a no riding day.
Hoping for reasonable weather we had planned to walk some of the nearby easy loch side trails, however due to the inclement weather, namely rain, low cloud and strong winds our plans changed.
Sensibility out of the window we decided to tackle the steepest track, up the side of a mountain, to a viewpoint that overlooks the loch.
The track led uphill at an angle of between 30-45 degrees, never far from a raging river that today was a classic foaming beery brown colour with the brackish water from the nearby mountains.
The track was at times a little uneven underfoot, but was in general well maintained. The track being clear of vegetation was a perfectly formed conduit for the downhill flowing rainwater. In essence we walked uphill in a steady stream of water.
.
As we walked higher the Scots Pines became thinner and smaller, heather becoming the dominant ground cover.
As we strode higher, leaving the treeline behind, the wind became fiercer and the rain more persistent. The low cloud covering the mountain tops constantly threatened to drop, engulfing us.
Accepting that we would not get any better views of Loch Torridon today we made a cautious descent, back to our accommodation for a hot drink.
For the motorcycle addicted, a picture of our bikes parked under the shelter of some large holly trees.
The weather improved a little by 5pm.
It was time to hit the whisky bar for a couple of pre-dinner drinks.
